The Red Wagon Parade, hosted by the student council, collects donated toys delivered to CornerStone Church to help 324 local children and families afford Christmas. The parade takes place tomorrow during Grove Time at 11:45 a.m.
The participating clubs and organizations will walk their decorated wagons, filled with donations, down the main hall.
“When we all parade through the halls, there’s a great sense of unity throughout our school,” student council president Soreya Moumouni said. “ Seeing students, staff, and parents come together for a shared purpose makes me proud to be a part of a community that cares so deeply.”
The donations for the parade are due today in the drop-off boxes around the school. A contest will be held for the best-decorated wagon.
“So, the big thing they are asking for is children ages six through 18,” student council advisor Ashlee Armstrong said. “They’re asking for toys, games, sporting equipment, blankets, and hoodies. Hoodies are a really big need this year.”
On Dec. 14, Cornerstone Church invites families to choose four gifts per child: a filled stocking, a hoodie, and a food box for a Christmas dinner.
“This might be the only gift that they get this year,” Armstrong said. “Being able to give them that opportunity just really shows what this season is about.”
At the Texas Association of Student Councils district fall conference, the student council was inspired by a homecoming toiletry drive organized by another school.
“We [student council] were like this is perfect,” Armstrong said. “We wanted to do a toy drive anyways, so we were like let’s make this a Christmas or a holiday drive with toys, and then we can do it down the hallway.
29 organizations are participating in the parade including honors societies, athletics, and fine arts.
“I think the Red Wagon Parade takes a unique approach to charity – giving,” Moumouni said. “It’s inspiring that instead of just dropping donations off, we ensure to include many diverse school groups and create an engaging event.”
