As a senior who has had raging senioritis since middle school, it is easy to eagerly count down the days until graduation and wish my high school time away. However, as I look forward to the future it is important to stay mindful of the present and appreciate the past. The journalism program has added so much value to my life including inspiration for my future, support of powerful mentors, friends and memories I will continuously cherish, and a perfect outlet for curiosity and creativity.

When I first joined newspaper my sophomore year, I had no idea what to expect. I had seen “Gilmore Girls” nearly a million times and admired how the main character, Rory, talked about her passion for journalism and her school paper. I needed an elective so I took a chance on newspaper. Little did I know it would become what I decided to pursue in college. I’ve always loved writing. From songs, poetry, and stories, I find catharsis in putting pen to paper. Journalism gave me an outlet to use my storytelling abilities to platform real news in my community. After seeing the impact this could have, I knew it was what I had to continue with as a career.
The newspaper has given me countless friends and mentors. Our advisor, Ms. Mersmann, has been there for me every step of the way. I know I can always come to her for advice not only on reporting, but leadership in the newsroom. She creates an environment for us to learn by trial-and-error, which is highly conducive to my own growth as a developing journalist. The friendships I’ve made on the staff have also played a major role in making my time in journalism so fun and rewarding. Whether it’s a normal day in the newsroom, or a trip to explore Austin, getting to hang out with the staff always leaves me with amazing memories.

Next year, I will major in journalism at the Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. I am beyond excited for what the future holds, but I couldn’t have made it into a program as special to me as Newhouse without the skills I learned at Wildcats Wired. This program has given me a strong foundation in essential journalistic skills including interviewing, editing, writing, and multimedia. However, I think the most important things I’ve gained from the program are lessons in responsibility, organization, leadership, and collaboration. All of these values will support me in my mission to excute insightful, informative, and factual storytelling throughout my college and career.
I am eternally grateful for the opportunities I’ve had at Wildcats Wired and would like to sincerely thank all my friends, teachers, and family members who have never hesitated to support me along the way.
