This Wednesday, the varsity soccer team traveled down to Garland, Texas, to play Adams High School in the fourth round of playoffs. In the first half, senior Midfielder Mason Kutch got fouled just outside the goalie box and was awarded a free kick by the referee.
Kutch shoots and makes the Wildcats’ first goal, allowing them to go up 1-0. Adams scores fast and ties the game at 1-1. Nearing the end of the first half, Mason Kutch scores again, retaking the lead and going up 2-1 for the Wildcats.
“We definitely didn’t play our best game,” Kutch said. “We were kinda sloppy, but I was still able to come away with two goals, and that feeling was amazing. The whole game just did not feel real.”
The second half starts slowly, with neither team scoring, but near the end, Adams scores, tying the game 2-2 and sending it into extra time. In the Extra time, neither team could break through the defense and score.
After the two ten-minute extra time periods, the game was sent to a penalty shoot-out. The Wildcats made their first two penalty kicks but missed their third. And finished going â…˜. Adams also went â…˜ on penalty kicks. The game went into a second set of penalty kicks. The Wildcats had gone 5/5 on penalties this time, and the last shooter for Adams was preparing to take the final penalty kick for Adams. He aimed low and to the left, and senior Goalie Quinn Shelton dove and saved the ball, giving the Wildcats the match.
“It was super fun saving the last shot of the game. It was super fun to do that for the people I have spent the last four months with. When everyone stormed the field to celebrate, it was just amazing,” Shelton said.
