IN A LAKE

Sets the scene for the story. The main character (we can call her Character A). is feeling haunted by her memories and emotions, and dreams of leaving it all behind for an ocean, clear path forward.

WHERE'S MY PHONE?

Character A is trying to find her phone but also herself, trying to get an empty mind but also herself, trying to get an empty mind without her hangups by staying out all night and drinking.

CATS

This is getting into the real meat of the album, Character A is in bed with her partner (Character B) and their two cats, reflecting how Character B doesn’t love her anymore, but she still loves him. If the relationship is going to end, it has to be on him. If she leaves, she will at least be happy he’s off to find his happiness.

IF I LEAVE

Character A is thinking about what would happen if she left Character B. She would be miserable, but he would be fine.

DEAD WOMEN

My personal favorite from the album! It’s so dark. Taken alone, it’s about the objectification and exploitation of women and the erasure of their voices in favor of treating them like playthings. In the story of the album, Character A, is asking if Character B would prefer if she died, so he didn’t have to leave her and suffer seeing her move on. It is like Character B wants to have her, wants to possess her, but also wants to go on with his life.

INSTEAD OF HERE

The theme of suicidal ideation becomes explicit, where Character A is dissociating and thinks she is dying (or has half-hardheartedly attempted suicide) but eventually gets up to keep on trucking. She and Character B have sex? I think? And she dissociates again, wondering if this is worth keeping him with her. Also, laying down in the dirt has a double meaning, the first being sex and the other being a grave.

I'LL CHANGE FOR YOU

Pretty straightforward! Character A and B have broken up, but Character A is very sad about it and goes out drinking alone, wishing she could change into someone Character B still loves.

RULES

Character A and B are making very terrible decisions.They've broken up, but are still hooking up, with Character A subtextually having tried to change into someone new for CHracter B. They have sex and Character A dissociates and cries, ALso she counts to eleven which is the same number as the songs of the album.

THAT WHITE CAT

Character A is depressed but clings to what scraps of motivation she has to keep living, like the various animals that call her house home.

CHARON'S OBOL

I think this is one of two endings to the story. Character makes her peace with what has happened to her. She puts ot rest the metaphorical “ghosts” of all the other women where stuck in loveless relationships and committed suicides or were killed. Her house may be haunted, but she's working to heal.

LIGHTNING

The other ending, the “bad” ending, the ghosts surround her and she commits suicide.
